Boys and Girls 11 to 18 can be Scouts. The Boys can join Troop 271, the girls join Troop 555. This website will discuss Troop 271 (boys).
We use the Boy Scouts of America book to guide the Scout’s Journey & Advancement through Scouting.
Scouting is mostly an OUTDOOR event. We want to get the Scouts away from the TV and computers/games. (If this sounds good, then you are in the right place)
We meet once a week. Tuesday nights at CURIE Elementary. Sometimes but infrequently, we meet at MBMA or Torrey Pines Church. Meetings last about 1.5 hr. We talk about upcoming events, Advancement in the BSA book, and ends with a game or two. The meeting is run by Scouts, (Senior Patrol Leader) and geared around having fun. The scouts are not required to attend every meeting, due to school homework or school sporting events. Scouts show up when they can, attendance is loose.
Advancement, Events, and Activities are driven by the Scouts. Assistant ASM (Parents) monitor and add guidance when needed. But the Scouts are allowed to fail, sometimes it’s the best way to learn.
Signing up is simple, online through the BSA imperial council of San Diego. It Involves a small yearly fee to be a Scout. The events also have small fees to attend, it’s not much and financial assistance is available, so no Scout is left behind for money reasons.
Reach Eagle Scout Rank, becoming good Citizens or Leaders who can take care of themselves for life.
High Adventure program. (Check the Gallery for current pictures of High Adventure Program) Campouts include Catalina Island, Anza Borrego, Grand Canyon, Fiesta Island. The Troop attends Sea Base, Northern Tier, Philmont & various other events. We do local campouts also. (Car camps)
In addition to the weekly meeting: We do a Weekly Sunday Bike Ride (2 or 3 pm, lasting ~2.5 hours) where we tour the local Mountain Bike trails. Including Torrey Pines State Park, Black Mountain, and many of the local trails through Marion Bear, Rose Canyon, Clairemont, etc.
The Sunday Mountain Bike ride varies in difficulty and can be used as Training & Conditioning for backpacking and other High Adventure Hiking events. We rotate between some beginning rides (5 miles) to more advanced & technical rides up to 20 miles. Last year we did a Del Dios Dirty Devil ride through central San Diego, about 30 miles. (Including a burrito break, so much fun) The Scouts have a ton of fun and stay in shape. at the same time. Parents are welcome to Mountain Bike also.
